2023 Recognition Awards

Dear Members:

The State Awards Committee is accepting nominations for service awards to be presented at our May 24, 2023 graduation at the Public Works Conference held at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. Please take a moment to reflect on a possible MEMBER or MEMBERS as a candidate, in your department or region who has performed in an exemplary manner or provided long term service to our association.

PUBLIC WORKS PERSON OF THE YEAR

PUBLIC WORKS PERSON OF THE YEAR STATE OR REGION OFFICER
Recognizes a PWANJ Officer for their contribution to community, employer and advancement of professionalism within the Public Works field.

Candidates Criteria:

  • A member of the PWANJ serving or have served as a State or Regional Officer Served a minimum of one (1) year.
  • Nominated by an officer of the Public Works Association of New Jersey. A licensed Certified Public Works Manager.


JOSEPH W. STAUSS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Named in the memory of one of the driving forces in the creation of the association, as we know it. He always professed safety and was instrumental in requiring staff to wear safety equipment. Service and dedication were his trademarks. A Memorial Park in Chatham Township is dedicated in his name. This award recognizes a State Executive Board Officer for their service to the Association.

Candidates Criteria:

  • A member of the PWANJ serving or have served as a member of the State Executive Board.
  • Served a Minimum of five (5) years.
  • Served on various committees and dedicated themselves to the advancement of our Association.
  • Nominated by a State or Regional Officer
  • A licensed Certified Public Works Manager.


SUPERINTENDENT EXCELLENCE AWARD

Public Works Association of New Jersey (PWANJ) Recognition Awards Criteria.
Recognizes a member for outstanding integrity, ethics and ability in the public works services profession as a superintendent.

Candidates Criteria:

  • Must be a Public Works Department Head or Assistant Department Head or equivalent.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of public works service.
  • Minimum of five (5) years as a Department Head or Assistant Department Head or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years as a member of the PWANJ. Nomination by any member of the Association.


JAMES FUNKHOUSER REGIONAL SERVICE AWARD

Named in memory of one of the forefathers of the association, who understood the value of education and was a true proponent of training. The award recognizes a Regional Officer for outstanding achievement and service to the region.

Candidates Criteria:

  • Member of PWANJ who is a current or past Regional Officer.
  • Supports the activities of the region.
  • Promotes professionalism in Public Works Services. Nomination by any member of the PWANJ.


JAMES SYLVESTER MEMORIAL HEROISM AWARD

Newly established to recognize any Public Works professional who has performed an outstanding act of lifesaving valor for a citizen or community above or beyond the call of citizenship. It is not intended to be an annual award. It is named in the memory of a Public Works Superintendent employed by Mount Ephraim, NJ who died fighting a house fire while serving as a volunteer Fire Chief on July 4, 2002.

CERTIFIED PUBLIC WORKS MANAGER

Amount: $3,500
Deadline: April 1, 2023
Field: Certified Public Works Manager (CPWM) Offered by Rutgers, The State University
Eligibility: Government employees presently employed in the Public Works field in the State of New Jersey who qualify for participation in the CPWM Program

Scholarship Requirements

  • A member, in good standing, of the Public Works Association of New Jersey.
  • A United States citizen and resident of the State of New Jersey.
  • Submit a letter for consideration with a brief history of your public works career, including future goals.
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation of PWANJ members who hold a valid CPWM designation.
  • Applicant must pay for the course up front. Upon satisfactory completion of each course, the applicant must submit paperwork to the Executive Board Treasurer for reimbursement.
  • Scholarship winner and all other applicants will be notified by mail by May 1, 2023.


COLLEGE / TECHNICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $3,000
Deadline: April 1, 2023
Field: All fields of study
Eligibility: High School Seniors who are college-bound or technical schoolbound or college or technical school students in their freshman or sophomore year who are attending a 2 or 4 year accredited college or trade school

Scholarship Requirements

  • Immediate family member must be an active member in good standing in the Public Works Association of New Jersey. Immediate family consists of parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters.
  • A United States citizen and resident of the State of New Jersey.
  • Applicant must maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 in High School or a GPA of 3.0 in college or technical school. Applicant must provide proof of GPA.
  • Submit an essay with this application as to the student’s present and future goals, along with how Public Works or other service oriented organization affected your decision, and how the scholarship money will be used.
  • Submit two (2) letters of reference or recommendation.
  • Scholarship winner and all other applicants will be notified by mail by May 1, 2023.
